How its Started?
Income Tax Department (ITD) and Centralized Processing Centre (CPC) are governments agencies, Ministry of Finance empowers these departments to collect direct tax on behalf of the government of India. Infosys teamed up with ITD as a Digital Strategy and Technology partner for redesigning ITR e-filling portal named later as ITR 2.0. It's mainly aimed to provide a single-window to income tax-related services for taxpayers and other stakeholders. Even though I filed tax returns myself, it was challenging to understand the domain especially the income tax laws and acts during the initial discussions.

My Role

-
I led the design of the ITR 2.0 for about 4months and collaborated with different stakeholders, conducting many workshops to gain more insights and develop new ideas.
-
In addition, I worked alongside a development team, a Content Strategist and 2 Product Managers.
-
Presenting Design iteration to Stakeholders and participating in client meetings.
-
Developing Wireframes and rapid prototyping the concepts.
-
Conducting usability testings and iterating design solutions.
I stopped working on the project during the detailed visual design phase as the portal started to be built. The site was launched for service on June 22nd, 2021.
Project Understanding
This is the official portal of the Income Tax Department, Ministry of Finance, Government of India. The portal has been developed as a Mission Mode Project under the National E-Governance Plan. The objective of this portal is to provide single window access to income tax-related services for taxpayers and other stakeholders.
Success Factor

We set forth a strategy to carefully implement all the features that will be used by two major user groups. There are many third-party services that are appealing to taxpayers as it's helping them to find ways to reduce the amount of tax. But the processing time which happening behind the screen takes up to 60 - 70 days of processing time. That's the key success factor to our design,
-
Reducing the tax return processing time by (CPC) from 60 days to 1-day limit can be possible by automating most of the process and steam lining the workflow.
-
Guided journey for new taxpayers along with detailed FAQs, user manuals, videos and chatbot/live agent support will differentiate and attract more novice users.
User Groups
-
Tax Payers
Individuals
Hindu Undivided Family (HUF)
Association of Persons (AOP)
Body of Individuals (BOI)
Firms
Companies
2. Tax processing team (CPC)

Key Stackholders

ITD is the department controlled by the Ministry of Finance which regulates taxation each year. CPC is a processing centre that calculates and decides the amount of taxation for each citizen who falls under different slabs of taxation, individual taxpayers interact with the ITD portal and the processing unit functions as a backend unit. As part of digital “e-return” filing, Infosys is collaborating and assisting the transformation as a strategy and technology partner.
